The Benefits of Benefits

On a daily basis we don’t often stop to think about our benefits from our job. Most often, we focus on our paycheck and how much our salary is annually. Our salary is an important part of job satisfaction and can have an impact on how we feel towards our jobs. What we forget to reflect on are the benefits aside from our salary that our organizations provide.
The two years I was in graduate school I had an individual health insurance policy, as I became a resident outside of my parents’ state. If there is one thing I learned very quickly, it was that health care is expensive. Without an organization contributing to my health care costs, I have come to appreciate company benefits even more.
Based on our 2011 panel study, 63% of employees feel content with their current benefits. When we get a job offer we are typically told about the benefits, but sometimes it is easy to push this aside and focus on the salary offer.
How can organizations raise awareness about the total benefits that employees are receiving? Give employees numbers; show them in dollar amounts how much the organization is contributing for benefits. If I was handed a detailed report of my total compensation, I know that I would look at things very differently.
Do you believe your benefits are worth it?
How much do you think your organization is contributing?
